Art is more than decoration, it’s a reflection of the artist’s moment… their hands and their history.
But in a world of reprints, uploads, and filters, what does it actually mean to invest in custom art?
Let’s break it down.

I’m always shocked by how many people want to invest in art but do not know what custom or commission artwork is.
But that’s why I felt the need to share this information so lets keep going…
Custom art refers to any piece commissioned or curated directly with the artist, whether original or digitally created. It’s personal, intentional, and often one-of-a-kind. But even within custom art, there are different formats and value structures.
Let’s start here:
Original art means the actual, hand-painted, hand-drawn, one-of-a-kind piece created by the artist. You can see the textures, the brush strokes, and maybe even the fingerprint smudges that say, I was here.
Digital art, on the other hand, may start as a handmade work but is then reproduced through digital scans or renderings. These are often made available as prints, beautiful and affordable, but not one-of-one.

So what is worth more?
There’s no competition in terms of long-term value:
Originals always appreciate more over time.
They carry the artist’s touch, their moment in history, and their story. When an artist’s work increases in demand, or when they’re no longer with us, those originals become even more precious.
Think of it like this: a digital print is a beautiful conversation.
An original? That’s an artifact.

Original Art Platforms:
Singulart (Artworks for Sale | Buy Original Art Online | SINGULART Gallery)

society 6
Redbubble
Saatchi and Etsy are also great platforms!
How to Know What’s Right for You
Ask yourself:
Do I want an affordable way to start my collection? → Start with digital.
Do I want a forever piece, something I can pass down? → Invest in originals.
Do I want to support the artist at the highest level? → Buy directly, and ask about commissions.
Final Thoughts
Whether it’s a bold canvas or a limited-edition print, custom art gives you the chance to connect…to a creator, a moment, and a story.
And in a world that moves fast, that kind of connection is the most lasting investment you can make.
